Overview (short introduction to the method):

Mentoring is a process of structured guidance whereby one person (mentor) shares their knowledge, skills and experience to assist others to progress in their careers. The general principle of mentoring process is TELL-SHOW-DO.

Objectives:

Mentoring is more than just giving advice, or passing on what your experience was in a particular area or situation. It's about motivating and empowering the other person to identify their own issues and goals, and helping them to find ways of resolving or reaching them - not by doing it for them, but by understanding and respecting different ways of working.
Group size:

usually two person –

mentor and trainee

Time:

very depends on working area, basic skills of trainee, needs of organization. The process can take from 1 day to some years

Resources:

depends on working area (working place, simulator, training room etc.)

Expected outcomes :

Quick induction of newcomers. Learning specific skills and knowledge that are relevant to professional and personal goals. Gaining from mentor's expertise.

Networking with a more influential employee. Internal professional growth of organization.

Instructions:

First question is to find the mentor. Needed to create mentor profile and find the right person.

A good mentor possesses the following qualities and skills:

  • Professional skills in working area

  • Willingness to share skills, knowledge, and expertise

  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and respect to colleagues

  • Provides guidance and constructive feedback

  • Motivates others by setting a good example.

 

The main process of mentoring is realized on working place. The mentor share his knowledges and experience  with trainee and describe the working process steps. The mentor show how himself do this work and then ask trainee to repeat after him. If trainee is ready to work independently the task of mentor is to support and control the quality of performance.

 

Process depends on specifics of profession. In any case the following steps should be included:

-           Theoretical explanation (TELL what)

-           Physical sample (SHOW how)

-           Independent performance under supervision (allow DO)
