Overview (short introduction to the method):

In 1920 in a surrealist meeting, came a man out of nowhere--Tristan Tzara (the avant-garde poet) - who suggested creating a poem on the spot by pulling the words out from a hat.
In 1959, painter and writer Brion Gysin developed the cut-up method further after accidentally re-discovering it. From such, unedited or otherwise "clipped" pieces of a consistent text were composed to make meaningful prose. Everyone can be an artist!

Skills and Competences :
Instructions:

The moderator advises the participants to try the ‘cut-up’ technique in order to create an individual poem and design it artistically. The poem will be created using the lines of famous poets, cutting out the right lines to achieve their poetic idea. Participants will design their collage using collage techniques.

Proceeding:

1. Participants receive poems printed in advance from various poets (the same verse may be printed several times, so that each participant has a separate copy).

2. Participants are asked to read the poems presented and prepare the material for their future poem. It is necessary to do this in this way:

  • Whenever any thought, phrase or word draws one’s attention from a poem at hand, and it seems to be interesting and acceptable, the participant must immediately cut that phrase out and place it on the sheet where the collage of his/her poem will be created.

It is necessary for the participant to prepare as many cut-outs as possible.

3. When a participant has already cut enough phrases, he/she has to arrange their own individual poem.

4. When the participant decides on the compilation of his/her poem, the clips have to be attached to the sheet.

5. Finally, participants design a poem using collage techniques.

6. At the end, each participant reads the poem that he created loud and clear.

It is fun to become a poet for a moment and understand that I also - CAN!
